Chapter Eleven

Travak

In this cell, time lost all meaning. I no longer knew if it was day or night. Sometimes I would fall asleep after one meal and wake up for the next, like I couldn’t figure out where the time had gone. Other times, five minutes stretched on for what felt like five days.

Meals were the only way to keep count. Even then, it was sometimes confusing. Was it lunch or dinner? Had the last breakfast I could recall been today or yesterday?

That meant that, at first, when Emily stopped showing up with my meals, I assumed that I was just confused. It seemed like it must’ve been time for her to come back… but time was a tricky thing. I waited, and waited, telling myself she would show up soon.

I started to suspect that, maybe, I had even skipped a meal or two. Had I been forgotten? My stomach rumbled with hunger, and I wondered how long it had been since I’d last eaten.

When I heard a noise outside my cell, my heart leapt with joy. Finally, she was back! I was hungry, but more than that, I was worried. I wanted to know that she was safe. That she’d just been busy or lost track of time.

But it wasn’t her. A guard brought me my food. Not Emily. I choked it down. The concern that had begun to creep into my thoughts was growing, and I just hoped I was wrong.

Maybe she was busy working. The next meal would surely put my mind at ease, right? To my dismay, she still didn’t return. Meal after meal, I hoped. It was the guards, the way that it had been before.

I tried to keep track, so that I could remember how many meals it had been. But my brain was so foggy and confused at this point, that it was impossible to make any sense of it.

Had she been gone for days? Where was she? Was she, at least, safe, and why wasn’t she here?

My gut started to churn with worry. I knew that she’d been certain she could help. But had she been caught? Did someone find out that she was siding with us – the “enemy”?

I tried to ask the guards, even though I knew I couldn’t trust an answer from them anyway. I wanted to at least know what they would say, and then I could decide if it was a lie.

But I couldn’t get a response from them, truthful or not. They wouldn’t even acknowledge me, let alone talk to me. They acted as though they didn’t hear me. No response, no explanation, nothing. It was infuriating, but I didn’t want to push too far. If she hadn’t been found out, I couldn’t seem too eager and accidentally give her away.

I tried to reassure myself that she had a job and she couldn’t ignore it. Maybe she was trying to fix the portal – something that would help us. Maybe she was with Maesara. The acid eating through my stomach didn’t seem to buy these excuses, but I kept trying to convince myself.
